Really happy with these in terms of quality, price and looks, had some stainless gripfast nails that made a pretty good seal with the counterbore in the top so expecting my posts to last longer as well as looking great, would happily buy again especially from a UK company.

Selected these caps primarily for the colour (grey) as our picket fence was painted grey with black posts, the caps blended in very nicely. The caps were well made, were reasonably priced, and do the job.

Autofocus Ross

They were grey so painting them with Ronseal fence paint (water based) was simple, but like all plastic, the paint 'bubbles' leaving gaps as you brush it on so use a very thin coat for the first couple of coats to get the paint to stick and dry quickly. Once those coats have dried, you can use the fence paint thickly to cover. These look very very smart on our old 75 x 75mm (3" x 3") timber posts. I had to replace the three horizontal rails on a 20 metre long ranch style fence, but the posts were in good condition. The old post caps, bought at the time, were timber and nailed on, and had weathered and split badly. These new caps, plus the new rails and new paint in charcoal grey has lifted the whole driveway, making it look very classy. The only negative, and its a small one, was that they don't supply fixing screws. That could be a good thing though, because the ONLY kind of screw you should use is a stainless steel countersunk head screw. You need just one, which goes centrally through the top and down into the post. Use 2" (50mm) x No.6, and when you've fixed them, just give the screw a half a turn to make sure you've sealed the screw hole on the top, to stop water getting through and under the screw. In rain, water will pool on the top of these so you do need them watertight. After fixing, and a coat of paint every day for 5 days they look stunning and you can't notice the screws. Three coats of paint are enough but as I live here and the paint was available, there is no harm in adding a few extra coats to protect the paint layers already applied previously. If you are fixing ranch style rail fencing, I would suggest that you use pressure treated timber, and when you cut it to fit between the posts, ONLY cut one end as both ends are treated before you get delivery. Once cut, have a bucket with a few inches of wood preserver and leave each rail cut end immersed in that for 4 hours or overnight. Get the rail out and then let it dry for a day before applying everbuild black jack bitumen paint on both ends. Allow that to dry before fixing the rail as it is messy stuff. Fix all your rails, and make the joint gaps between each one as tight as you can. Once fixed, I used external frame sealant to fill the gaps between them, and after leaving to dry for a day, began the painting process. I had pre-painted the posts, and had given the rails a couple of coats before fixing them. Fence paint is horribly poor at covering. It looks like you've painted the wood, and you have, but when you go back five minutes later, the wook looks like you havent touched it yet - this keeps happening for the first two coats, and long term satisfaction means you have to buy enough paint, and allow enough time, to apply at least four coats (or more if you can) at which point, the underlying wood, or previous paint colour, does not 'shine' through and you have a nice, solid, mat, new colour fence. These caps transformed the rustic look to something far nicer and contemporary so I hope I've not bored you with the technique side of the review, It comes after YEARS of experience. The lad in the Karate Kid movie had to paint a fence to increase his strength, so if you follow my advice, who knows, you could have a nice new fence, AND a black belt in karate by the autumn.
